Sjogren’s Syndrome

Sjogrens

Sjogren’s Syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can impact various parts of the body. The most common symptoms are dryness in the eyes and mouth. Other symptoms may include fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, and, occasionally, involvement of the lungs, kidneys, liver, or nervous system.

Diagnosis involves a detailed review of the patient’s symptoms, a physical examination, and laboratory tests.

Because Sjogren’s Syndrome can affect multiple body systems, a multidisciplinary team approach is often necessary. This team might include a rheumatologist, eye specialist, dentist, oral medicine physician, internal medicine physician, and other specialists as needed.

Effective management of Sjogren’s Syndrome starts with maintaining good health practices, such as following a healthy diet and quitting smoking. Dietary supplements, like omega-3 fatty acids, can also be beneficial.

Medications that cause dryness should be avoided. Based on the symptoms, your rheumatologist may prescribe specific medications to help manage the condition.
